Afro Hair Type Chart & Our Favorite Natural Styles!
Popular hair typing systems that classify hair textures have been around since as early 1908, and have had a controversial history of texturism and discrimination against Afro textured hair.
This controversy includes Andre Walker's most popular hair typing system of the 1990's, while he was the stylist for Oprah Winfrey.
The hair typing systems place type 4 Afro textured hair last on the chart at the bottom, and have centered favoritism for the wavy and looser curl textures due to their closer proximity to European hair placed first, at the top of the chart.
Afro textured hair is typically type 4, but can also include type 3 textures, or a combination of hair textures that fall in the range of both type 4 and 3 on one head.
Our magazine seeks to put the focus of hair and its care on Afro textures, as our hair is unique, beautiful, and able to be grown, healthy, and styled in its natural state, just as other hair textures can.
Below is a photo of the hair typing system chart that focuses on Afro textured hair, and photos of some of our favorite natural hair styles!
